Creating a Japanese garden style is a way of thinking and not just something you create. The Japanese people must discover respect and admiration of nature is what you are before you try to build this garden style. Only you said your comment about the statues and lanterns, you need to study and think a bit more before you start.
First step: Find a room or to protect wildlife in the area outside of all persons and human remains. Spend the whole day to watch there, and nature and how they interact. Investigation of the flow of soil and plants interact and stones and water. Enjoy your day and try to learn to respect and admire nature because of its wonderful beauty.
Second step: Get some books that the real landscape written by Japanese masters, not just some countries of Latin America, Asia, produce books of the landscape. Get books with lots of real pictures of Japanese gardens. Study pictures of gardens.
Third step: Take what you have learned from nature and the images have to study it and what you can create a garden.
Here are some links that can help.
Let me start with the library. We have studied the concept of a Japaneese garden too. Among other things, we learned that there is a difference between "old" and the "traditional" and modern Japanese gardens, Japanese gardens. Even in the styles of "traditional", more than one "type", somewhat akin to the difference in English "formal", "Cut", "field" gardens. What we discovered, it is important to understand the concepts, feelings, and function of the individual. And then again on the styles, vegetation types, hard and firmscapes, and the necessary forms for each.
Among other things, there must be a unit with the native / Environment "By following this approach we could even have a Japanese garden with a feeling of loss of desert cacti. Only when you have some understanding concpets a Japanese garden, you have an idea of add the types of hardscape, how and what kind of shape and size to match yourRoom.
You can also check on the way to the Garden Chineese. The Chinese more color and variety in the vegetation. From what I read, seem less dogmatic and inflexible.
Interestingly, we found a fairly clear explanation of the Japanese gardens in what is now an old Time Life publication entitled "Japanese Gardens". The library or bookseller is the place to look for them on the printed book.
A reading group here.
My Best
Palm, palm oil and palm dragon fish tail is a good choice.
If you can live with for a decent climate palm mill worth a try. are tropical look, but also Japanese searching, finding in nature in Aisa. even the most stable of all the palm trees and trunking tollerate 10 degrees, but with external protection in the first two winters, that all will be well when the nights get cold as 5 degrees. Palms are also very suitable for giving a sense of AISAN time and if an adult can be as low as -10 degrees fahenheit survive each winter injury, but with 0 degrees Celsius, not bad.
